Proposed BTL & Speednet

Know Di Facts

Price protections Service continuity safeguards No forced migration

What's Being Proposed

BTL’s proposed acquisition of Speednet as part of its broader effort to strengthen Belize’s telecommunications sector and deliver noticeable improvements to connectivity, services and economic opportunities for all Belizeans.

By bringing together overlapping infrastructure and redeploying excess capacity, the transaction would extend coverage, improve reliability, increase speeds, and deliver stronger value over time.

Consolidation will strengthen the national network that consumers, businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and essential services rely on and help prepare Belize for the future digital economy.

BTL continues to conduct consultations with stakeholders including policymakers, regulators, business groups, community leaders, unions, employees and shareholders as part of our commitment to responsible decision-making.

Benefits You'd Experience

Wider coverage and inclusion

As we redeploy duplicate network infrastructure to underserved and unserved areas, reaching approximately 20,000 additional people.

Faster speeds, greater reliability
and better value

as we combine towers, fiber and spectrum, remove duplication and reinvest savings back into the network and customer offers.

Simple bundles

(mobile + home internet + TV/content) for added convenience: one provider, one bill, more value.

Customer Protections

No forced migration
Customers can keep existing or equivalent tariffs. We’ll communicate any change clearly.

Price caps
For up to 36 months on selected mobile tariffs and data plans, monitored under PUC compliance. No new or hidden fees due to transaction.

Continuity
Services continue as usual while we improve quality, capacity, and consistency during 24-month integration.

Support for vulnerable and elderly customers
Social tariffs, fair treatment for prepaid users, and accessible customer service and complaint processes with escalation rights to the PUC.

Clear service standards:
Minimum quality benchmark, defined fault repair and restoration timelines.

Inclusion: Support for vulnerable & elderly. Social tariffs and fair treatment for prepaid customers.

Accountability:
Quarterly reporting on complaints, outages, and service performance.

Impact of Network Expansion

  • Education: Would give 19 additional schools access to high-speed Internet through the ConnectEd initiative, transforming learning opportunities for more children in rural and other underserved areas.
  • Financial Inclusion: Would make mobile banking services like DigiWallet accessible to more communities, giving residents a secure way to manage their money digitally without long commutes to banks.
  • Economic Opportunity: Would help drive economic growth by giving small businesses, tourism operators, farmers and others a better ways to reach customers, manage their work, and get paid. This would help local businesses earn more, create jobs, and strengthen the local economy.
  • Quality of Life: Would improve daily life for people in underserved areas by providing access to information, services and opportunities that are otherwise hard to reach, empowering them to more fully participate in Belize’s modern economy and society.
  • Resilience: Would add backup routes and coverage for new sites, such as schools and hospitals, reducing downtime during storms and emergencies

Have questions?

We got answers!

  • Has the acquisition been approved?
BTL is consulting with a wide cross-section of key stakeholders to share information and answer questions to arrive at a decision that provides the best outcome for customers, businesses, employees and all of Belize. The matter remains under review through the appropriate legal and regulatory processes. Once a decision is made, we will share it publicly.

  • How would service quality improve?
We would accelerate fiber expansion, strengthen mobile coverage, add redundancy for resilience, and invest in cybersecurity and data protection, so customers experience fewer outages and safer connectivity.

  • Would my current plan change?
All existing services and plans would continue as normal while we integrate networks. If anything changes in the future, we’ll contact you in advance.

  • Would service be disrupted?
Network integration would be phased over 24 months and designed to avoid service interruptions and protect customer care. If maintenance is needed, we would schedule it carefully and notify affected customers.
  • Why would this be good for customers?
Combining networks reduces duplicate costs and would allow us to reinvest savings into better coverage, faster speeds, and improved value for customers across Belize.

  • What would you do for rural areas?
We’d redeploy duplicated assets to expand service in underserved and unserved communities as part of our 24-month integration plan.

  • How would customers be protected during the transition?
We’d commit to PUC-compliant safeguards, including annual progress reporting on coverage, quality, and capacity.

  • Will prices go up?
Our focus is on affordable, dependable service for every Belizean. Efficiency gains from shared networks and back-office systems help control costs and support fair, sustainable pricing. If a transaction were to occur, there would be price caps on selected mobile tariffs and data plans for up to 36 months, monitored under PUC compliance, with no new or hidden fees due to the transaction
